Abstract
Gaziantep was located on the main road connecting Anatolian and western cultures during the Hittite, Assyrian and classical periods, and therefore became an important trade and accommodation centre. This city, which has witnessed various civilisations throughout history, has a rich cultural and folklore heritage. Traditions have an important place in Gaziantep culture. Our study aims to determine the practices and beliefs of Hıdırellez, in which the people participate in Gaziantep. At the same time, it aims to reach generally valid data about the current situation of the tradition in Gaziantep. For this purpose, while writing down the data we obtained in the interviews, we also tried to determine their place in the tradition. The importance of our research comes from the fact that our study is a field research and aims to record the traditions that are disappearing in Gaziantep. When the literature is examined, the fact that there is no other compilation study on Hıdırellez in Gaziantep increases the importance of the study. Since our study is a field research, interviews were recorded with a voice recorder by using a questionnaire form for biographical information records and photographs of the source persons were taken. Document analysis was used as a source for the first part of the study. By taking two expert opinions; we systematised the compilation of data by questionnaire method before going to the field. During the compilation, directed interview method was used. We used the observation method since we carried out our compilations in the homes of the source persons. In Gaziantep and its surroundings, our findings have shown us that Hıdırellez practices have continued to a great extent from the traditional period to the present day. On Hıdırellez, it is believed that wishes will be accepted and the bad luck of the old period will be left behind. For this reason, water is an important factor and fire appears as a cleanser. Old beliefs continue in Hıdırellez traditions. Beliefs and practices related to trees and water also continue. Because the ancient Turks have the spirit of the tree and water.
